Planning Ahead, Not Looking Back: Why I Built Planning Mode

When I started building ALTE, I kept coming back to one question: why do so many health apps only care about what already happened?

Most health apps are excellent at showing your history. They'll tell you what you ate yesterday, how long you exercised last week, or how much protein you've consumed so far today. That's useful information, but by the time you're looking at it, those decisions have already been made.

I wanted to build something that could help before the decision was made.

The Best Health Decisions Happen Before They Need To

Think about tomorrow for a moment.

Maybe you've decided you'll work out after work. You pack your gym clothes, plan a higher-protein breakfast, and choose a quicker supper because you'll be getting home later. None of those decisions happen while you're standing in the kitchen wondering what to eat. They happen while you still have the time and mental energy to think ahead.

That's the idea behind Planning Mode. It's not about predicting the future or creating a rigid schedule. It's about helping Future You by letting Present You make a few thoughtful decisions in advance.

Meal Planning That Works the Way You Do

My favourite part of Planning Mode is meal planning.

Most meal planning apps start with recipes. They suggest meals using ingredients you don't have, recipes you weren't planning to cook, and shopping lists you never asked for.

I wanted something much simpler.

If you already know tomorrow's breakfast is Greek yogurt, lunch is leftover chicken salad, and supper is salmon with potatoes, just plan those meals. They're the foods you're actually going to eat, so why shouldn't your plan reflect that?

Then, when tomorrow arrives, you don't have to log everything from scratch. As you eat each meal, simply tap Confirm. Your planned meal instantly becomes a logged meal, saving time while still accurately recording what you actually ate. If your plans change, that's perfectly fine—you can edit, replace, or remove anything before confirming it.

Planning should reduce friction, not create more work.

Plans and Reality Are Different Things

One design decision I felt strongly about was keeping planned and confirmed items separate.

Planning is an intention. Logging is what actually happened.

Maybe work runs late and you skip the gym. Maybe dinner plans change and you order pizza instead of cooking. That's not failure—it's just life.

Nothing counts toward your goals until you confirm it. Your plans are there to guide you, not judge you.

See Where Your Day Is Headed

Planning your meals ahead of time also gives you a much clearer picture of your nutrition.

Instead of only seeing what you've already logged, ALTE separates your confirmed nutrition from what's still planned. At a glance, you can see how many calories and macros you've already consumed, how much is still planned for the rest of the day, and what your totals will look like if everything goes according to plan.

That distinction matters. Your confirmed meals reflect what you've actually eaten, while your planned meals help you understand where your day is headed. If you decide to swap your planned supper for something else, your projected calories and macros update immediately.

It's a small detail, but it changes how you think about nutrition. Instead of reacting after the fact or doing mental math throughout the day, you can make informed decisions before the day is over.

Looking Forward

Health isn't built one meal at a time. It's built one decision at a time, and many of those decisions happen long before you're standing in front of the fridge wondering what's for supper.

Planning Mode isn't about creating the perfect schedule. It's about making tomorrow a little easier than today by helping you plan ahead, adapt when life happens, and spend less time logging and more time living.

That's the kind of software I want to build—not software that simply records your life, but software that quietly helps you live it a little better.
