Getting Started

What is Alte?

Alte is an iPhone and Apple Watch app for tracking your health and fitness in one place — workouts, food and nutrition, water, weight and body measurements, sleep, supplements, and progress photos. I built it as a solo studio, Gallant Labs, and the goal is to keep everything you log in a single app that works tightly with Apple Health and syncs across your own devices.

It's not a social app and there's no feed — it's a personal tracker. You log what you do, and Alte gives you charts, daily totals, and insights from your own data.

How do I get started?

The first time you open Alte, there's a short setup. You pick a goal (lose, build, maintain, or just track), enter a few basics like your sex, height, and starting weight, choose your units (lbs/kg, mi/km, oz/ml), and set your calorie and macro targets. Alte estimates a calorie target for you using the Mifflin-St Jeor formula, but you can override it. You can also turn on Apple Health, supplements, and Planning Mode during setup. After that you land on the Today view, where you do most of your day-to-day logging.

What can I track?

Quite a lot:

  • Food & nutrition — calories plus protein, carbs, and fat (and fiber, sugar, sodium when available), organized into meals like breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
  • Workouts — cardio (with distance and duration), strength (sets, reps, weight, with a built-in exercise library and 1-rep-max records), and classes/flexibility.
  • Water, in ml or oz.
  • Weight and body measurements (waist, chest, hips, arms, and others).
  • Sleep — bedtime, wake time, and a quality rating.
  • Supplements — with daily schedules.
  • Progress photos — categorized front/back/side, shown on a timeline.

You can also save meal templates, workout templates, and recipes to reuse, and tag days (e.g. "stressful," "heavy legs") to compare them in Insights later.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. Alte works fully on iPhone on its own. If you do have an Apple Watch, there's a companion app that shows your day at a glance, lets you start, pause, and end workouts from your wrist, and lets you quick-add water. There are also watch complications and Lock Screen / Home Screen widgets for things like calories, steps, and water. The watch and phone sync with each other live.

Does Alte work with Apple Health?

Yes, if you choose to connect it. When you grant permission, Alte can read your steps, active energy, sleep, weight, and workouts from Apple Health, and write the workouts, weight, water, nutrition, and body measurements you log in Alte back to Health. It's optional — you can turn it on during setup or later in your Profile, and you control exactly what's shared from the iOS Health permissions screen.

Features

How does the AI food logging work?

There are two AI shortcuts for logging food. You can take a photo of your meal and Alte will try to identify the foods in it, or you can type a description ("2 eggs, toast, orange juice") and it will pull out the individual foods. In both cases it then searches the nutrition database for matches and shows you the results to confirm or adjust before anything is saved — nothing is logged automatically without your okay.

The AI features run through a small backend I operate (built on Cloudflare). There are daily limits — about 10 photo recognitions and 15 text parses a day.

Where does the nutrition data come from?

Food search and nutrition facts are powered by the FatSecret Platform API. Barcode scanning looks products up in Open Food Facts. You can also create your own custom foods and recipes, and Alte remembers what you've used so your common items are quick to find.

Can I scan barcodes?

Yes. Alte uses your camera to scan a product barcode and looks it up in Open Food Facts, then adds it to your food library. Barcode scanning needs a real device with a camera — it won't work in the Simulator.

Can I plan meals and workouts ahead of time?

Yes — that's Planning Mode, which you can turn on in setup or your Profile. It lets you schedule workouts and meals in advance and then confirm them once you've actually done them. Only confirmed entries are written to Apple Health, so your planned-but-not-done items don't pollute your real data.

Can I get reminders?

Yes. You can set reminders for workouts, meals, and water at specific times and on chosen days of the week. Water reminders can also be spread evenly across a window (say, every couple of hours from morning to evening). Supplements have their own schedules with reminders too.

Privacy & Data

Where is my data stored?

Your data lives on your device first. Alte uses Apple's SwiftData for local storage, and if you're signed into iCloud it also syncs to your own private iCloud account so your data is backed up and shared across your devices. I don't run a server that holds your fitness data, and I can't see it.

Do I need to create an account or log in?

No. There's no Alte account, no email sign-up, and no password. Syncing is tied to your Apple ID / iCloud, and subscriptions are handled through your Apple ID. If you want an extra layer of privacy on the app itself, you can turn on a passcode lock.

Is my health data sent anywhere?

Your logged health and fitness data stays on your device and in your private iCloud — it isn't sent to me or to any third party. Anything from Apple Health stays on your device and in Health.

A few specific features do talk to outside services, and only for the task at hand:

  • Food search & barcodes send your search text or a barcode to look up nutrition info (via FatSecret and Open Food Facts).
  • AI food logging sends the meal photo or the text you typed to my Cloudflare backend so it can be analyzed and matched to foods.
  • Subscriptions are managed through RevenueCat using an anonymous, randomly generated ID — not your name or email.

These services have their own privacy policies covering how they handle that data. For the full picture, see Alte's privacy policy.

Does Alte sync across my iPhone and Apple Watch and other devices?

Yes. Sync happens automatically through your private iCloud account — you don't have to set anything up beyond being signed into iCloud. Your iPhone and Apple Watch also exchange today's data with each other directly so the watch stays current. One exception: reminders and supplement schedules are kept local to each device on purpose and aren't synced through iCloud.

Can I delete my data?

Yes, in two ways from your Profile:

  • Reset fitness data clears your logged entries (weights, workouts, meals) but keeps your templates and settings.
  • Delete profile wipes everything — all your logged data, templates, photos, and settings — both on the device and in your iCloud, so it can't reappear later.

Deleting your data in Alte does not touch anything stored in Apple Health.

Can I export my data?

Yes. In your Profile, tap Export My Data and Alte packages your full logged history into a .zip you can save or share through the usual share sheet (Files, AirDrop, email, and so on). Inside the zip is one CSV per category — weight, water, sleep, body measurements, food and meals, cardio/strength/class workouts, supplements, day tags, and your profile and goals — plus a short README explaining each file. The CSVs open in any spreadsheet app like Numbers, Excel, or Google Sheets.

When you export, you choose Data and Photos or Data Only. "Data and Photos" also bundles your progress photo images in a photos/ folder; either way a progress_photos.csv index lists each photo's date and category. Your data is yours to take with you, not locked inside the app.

(If you just want a quick shareable picture of your weight trend, there's also a separate weight-chart image export.)

Pricing & Availability

How much does Alte cost?

Alte is a paid subscription — Alte Pro — that unlocks the whole app, with a free trial to start. There are monthly and annual options. The subscription covers unlimited workout and nutrition tracking, AI food logging, full charts and insights, and iCloud sync. Billing is handled by Apple through your Apple ID. Prices vary by region, so the App Store shows the current price in your country.

Is there a free version?

There's a free trial, but Alte isn't a permanently free or ad-supported app — after the trial it requires the Alte Pro subscription to keep using it. I'd rather charge a fair price than run ads or sell data.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You manage or cancel anytime in your Apple ID subscription settings (Settings → your name → Subscriptions) — the same place you manage every other App Store subscription.

I already paid — how do I restore my subscription on a new device?

On the paywall screen there's a Restore Purchases button. Because your subscription is tied to your Apple ID, restoring brings it back on any device signed into the same account. There's also a Redeem a Code option if you have a promo code.

What devices and iOS version do I need?

Alte needs iOS 17 or later on iPhone, and watchOS 10 or later for the Apple Watch app.

Troubleshooting

My data isn't syncing between devices — what should I check?

Sync runs through iCloud, so first make sure both devices are signed into the same iCloud account and have iCloud turned on and a network connection. Syncing can take a little while, especially right after a big change. Remember that reminders and supplement schedules are intentionally kept local to each device, so those won't appear on your other devices — that's expected, not a bug.

Why isn't barcode scanning working?

Barcode scanning needs camera access and a physical device — it doesn't work in the Simulator. If scanning won't open, check that you've allowed Alte camera access in iOS Settings → Alte. If a scanned product comes up empty, it may not be in the Open Food Facts database yet — you can add it as a custom food.

The AI food logging stopped working or says I've hit a limit — why?

The AI photo and text features have daily limits (about 10 photos and 15 text parses per day), so if you've used a lot today, that's likely it — they reset the next day. They also rely on my backend being reachable, so a temporary outage or no network connection can pause them. The rest of the app keeps working normally either way.

Apple Health isn't showing my Alte data (or vice versa) — how do I fix it?

Health sharing is permission-by-permission. Open iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Alte and confirm the specific categories (workouts, weight, nutrition, water, steps, sleep) are enabled in the direction you expect. Alte only reads or writes what you've granted, so a missing category usually means that permission is off.

I'm not getting reminder notifications.

Make sure notifications are allowed for Alte in iOS Settings → Notifications → Alte, and that the reminder is set for a time and day that's actually coming up. Because reminders are stored locally per device, you'll only get them on the device where you set them up.

About the Developer

Who makes Alte?

Alte is made by Gallant Labs, a one-person indie studio. It's not backed by a big company — it's a personal project I build and maintain myself, which is also why privacy and keeping your data in your own iCloud matter to me.

How do I send feedback or report a bug?

There's a Send Feedback link in the app under About, and I read everything that comes through. You can also use the feedback form here on the site. If something's broken or missing, that's the best way to tell me.

Does Alte sell my data or show ads?

No. There are no ads, and I don't sell your data. The subscription is how the app is funded, which is deliberate — it means I don't have a reason to monetize your information.
